Equipment: The Michigan Innovation Equipment Depot (MIED)

Now there's a great way for start-up life sciences companies to get equipment for their business. Through a unique collaboration, previously used equipment is available to qualified life sciences companies throughout the state.

The Michigan Innovation Equipment Depot (MIED) program was developed by Pfizer Global Research and Development in conjunction with Ann Arbor SPARK, MichBio, and Michigan's SmartZones™. The mission of the MIED program is to provide life science start-up companies throughout Michigan with equipment resources to further their growth.

MIED will provide access to previously used laboratory equipment critical to a company's product research, development and manufacturing. The responsibilities of the organizations will fall along these lines:
  • Michigan SmartZones will be responsible for due diligence of the companies and their requests
  • MichBio will help evaluate requests to determine best use of equipment for the benefit of Michigan's fast growing life science sectors
  • Ann Arbor SPARK will administer the program and be responsible for receiving donated equipment and instruments, providing warehouse facilities, and distributing items to the companies

U-M Chemistry Technical Services

Services are available to assist life science companies in their discovery and development efforts.  This is a way to gain local access to technical capabilities (on a short term basis if desired) without having to hire and staff such positions and instrumentation internally.  We have skilled expertise in areas including elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, nmr, FTIR, chromatography, glass blowing, computer networking, electronics instrumentation repair, computer interfacing, instrument control, data collection, custom software development, instrument fabrication and machining.  Personnel are accustomed to interacting with and providing service to research needs.  We could provide repair for equipment available through the Michigan Innovation Equipment Depot, perhaps even before it is lent out.
